Fulvifomes johnsonianus is a species of fungus that belongs to the family Hymenochaetaceae. It is a perennial, woody bracket fungus that grows on living trees, particularly oak species. In East and Central Texas, Fulvifomes johnsonianus has been found to commonly infect Quercus stellata, Quercus buckleyi, and other white oaks. The fungus produces conks that are 2-10 cm in diameter, with a fulvous to reddish-brown upper surface and a pale yellow to cream-colored pore surface. It is typically found on the trunks and branches of infected trees, often in association with other fungi and insects.

AI-generated summary of observations
Observations were made of the resupinate polypore mushroom Fulvifomes johnsonianus and the parasitic fungus Sporophagomyces chrysostomus on fallen oak logs in Texas. The mushroom was found on multiple occasions in Sam Houston National Forest from 2020 to 2021, and again in Little Thicket Nature Sanctuary in 2024. The parasitic fungus was often present on the mushroom, with varying appearances, including crust-like and orange-spored forms. The observations were made at different times of the year, suggesting a persistent relationship between the two organisms. The detailed descriptions and photographs provide a comprehensive record of the interaction between Fulvifomes johnsonianus and Sporophagomyces chrysostomus in their natural habitat. Overall, the observations contribute to a better understanding of the ecology and behavior of these fungi.
