Porina heterospora is a crustose lichen that grows on trees, particularly oak and cedar elm, in shaded, humid environments. In East and Central Texas, it forms olive-green to brownish-gray patches with a rough, wart-like surface, and produces black, sessile perithecia. The species is known to occur on the trunks and branches of mature trees in wooded areas, including those along streams and rivers, where the climate is mild and humid.
