Common name: Firm Russula.
Russula compacta is a species of mushroom characterized by its small to medium size, compact cap, and dense gills. In East and Central Texas, it typically fruits from June to October, often in association with oak and pine trees. The cap is usually 2-5 cm in diameter, convex to flat, and ranges in color from reddish-brown to yellowish-brown. The stem is short, stout, and white to cream-colored. Microscopic features include elliptical spores measuring 6-8 μm in length and a pileipellis consisting of cylindrical cells. Russula compacta can be found in wooded areas, particularly in the Edwards Plateau and Piney Woods regions of East and Central Texas.
