The mushroom was found on a forest road in Little Thicket Nature Sanctuary in Cleveland, Texas, during a mushroom walk on November 3, 2018. Further observations were made in the same sanctuary on June 26, 2021, where the underside and gills of the mushrooms were examined. The species was also spotted on Winters Bayou Trail in Sam Houston National Forest on July 18, 2021, with detailed observations of its gills and dissected parts. Additionally, a comparison with Russula eccentrica was made on June 4, 2022, in Little Thicket Nature Sanctuary, highlighting the differences between the two species. These observations suggest that Russula cortinarioides is present in the region's forests, particularly in areas with pine and oak trees.
