Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus – Violet-gray Bolete

Synonym: Boletus plumbeoviolaceus.

Common name: Violet-gray Bolete.

Extract from Wikipedia article: Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus (formerly Boletus plumbeoviolaceus), commonly known as the violet-grey bolete, is a fungus of the bolete family. First described in 1936, the mushroom has a disjunct distribution, and is distributed in eastern North America and Korea. The fruit bodies of the fungus are violet when young, but fade into a chocolate brown color when mature. They are solid and relatively large—cap diameter up to 15 cm (5.9 in), with a white pore surface that later turns pink, and a white mycelium at the base of the stem. Like most boletes of genus Tylopilus, the mushroom is inedible due to its bitter taste. A number of natural products have been identified from the fruit bodies, including unique chemical derivatives of ergosterol, a fungal sterol.

AI-generated description

Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus is a species of bolete fungus characterized by its plumbeous to violaceous cap, white to pinkish pores, and blue-gray to violet stem. In East and Central Texas, it typically fruits in late summer to early fall, often in association with oak and pine trees. The cap ranges from 3-8 cm in diameter, and the flesh is white to pale yellow, staining blue when injured. The spores are olive-brown to brown in deposit. This fungus can be found in a variety of habitats, including woodland edges, sandy soils, and along roadsides, particularly in areas with an abundance of Quercus and Pinus species.

AI-generated summary of observations

Multiple observations of the fungus Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus were made in East and Central Texas, specifically in Lick Creek Park, College Station, and Sam Houston National Forest near Huntsville and Cleveland. The mushrooms were found growing singly or in groups, often in wooded areas with pine trees, from May to October. They were described as having a violet-grey color and a bitter taste. Dissected specimens showed the characteristic features of the species. The mushrooms were also found in association with other species, such as Amanita jacksonii and Phylloporus foliiporus. Spore prints collected from the mushrooms had a violet color, confirming the identification of Tylopilus plumbeoviolaceus. The observations spanned several years, from 2018 to 2022, indicating that the species is consistently present in these areas during the warm months.
